Measurements have been made of the maximum separation X at which charge is transferred by means of a discharge process between two rigid spheres of radii r and R located in a uniform external electric field E . The experimental relationships between X, E, r and R are in good agreement with the calculations of Davis (1964). It was observed that for small separations charge transfer occurs even in the presence of weak external fields because the local field between the near surfaces of the spheres is greater than the external field strength by an amount that increases rapidly as their separation decreases.
