A very much simplified terminology in which cloud names are related to the physical and dynamical mechanisms producing the clouds is needed for the purposes of communication between cloud physicists, and for the purpose of teaching the subject in a scientific manner. Such a terminology is outlined using a few of the best known Latin terms together with selected English words. There is no major departure from recent practice, but definitions are related to mechanisms, not appearances, and are made more exact.
