In supercooled water at temperatures down to‐4·5°C, ice grows in the form of flat dendritic sheets. Between‐4·5° and −5°C a transition in the manner of freezing occurs and three‐dimensional ice structures are produced. At temperatures below‐5·5°C this results in a structure which retains liquid water and so gives rise to spongy ice.
