Expressing the coefficient q , of the rate‐of‐ascent formula of the balloon (e.g. V = q F 1/2 /( W + F ) 1/3 , where V is the rate of ascent of the balloon, W the weight of the balloon and F the free‐lift) in terms of the coefficient of aerodynamic resistance κ of the balloon, a curve of q as a function of the Reynolds number N is worked out. Introducing a κ N 2 – N curve, the value of q , appropriate to a balloon flight is obtained.
