It is demonstrated that diurnal and semi‐diurnal variations of wind occur in the lower stratosphere. These oscillations appear to be associated with the solar tides. The stratospheric semi‐diurnal oscillation of wind is in phase with, and of comparable magnitude to, the surface semi‐diurnal oscillation of wind. In the stratosphere, the diurnal oscillation is found to be of similar magnitude to the semi‐diurnal oscillation.
