The first part of this paper contains a discussion of the application of the method of least squares for calculating vertical temperature gradients and thus reducing temperatures as recorded at station level, to sea level. The second part is devoted to a discussion of the results arrived at. Apart from South Africa, the lapse rates for India and the Western and Eastern U.S.A. were also calculated, forty or fifty representative stations being selected in each area. For South Africa the temperature‐influencing factors of altitude, latitude and rainfall are considered simultaneously, whereas for India and the U.S.A. only the factors of altitude and latitude are taken into account. The values both of the lapse rate and of the variation of temperature with latitude are represented graphically, and explanations are offered for their seasonal variations.
