Weather conditions and aeroplane ascents at Karachi between June 22 and July 2, 1936, have been examined for understanding the mechanism of thundery conditions which prevailed there during that period. It is observed that thundery conditions occurred when the characteristic monsoon inversion was absent and there was a sufficiently deep layer of air which when raised to a certain level either by insolation, arrival of sea air, or convergence of winds, released an appreciable amount of energy of latent instability.
