International audienceThis Special Issue presents a wide range of studies carried out over the last three years exploiting the exceptional dataset of observations and model output collected during SOP1. The special issue consists of a series of 31 articles. Some major results of these articles are summarized in the following sections. Section 2 presents advances in observations and their use in characterizing HPE, section 3 highlights the advances in process understanding, and section 4 details results about predictability of HPE from numerical weather prediction (NWP) and regional climate models
