Clozapine is highly effective in patients with treatment‐resistant schizophrenia. However, the occurrence of neutropenia and agranulocytosis in 1% to 2% of treated patients has necessitated the requirement of frequent hematological monitoring, limiting the usefulness of clozapine for more patients. Most clinical guidelines recommend that clozapine be discontinued when the white blood cell count is less than 3,000/µl or the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is less than 1,500/µl in treated individuals.
