In findings not consistent with guidelines that have discouraged the prescribing of lithium for pregnant women, a systematic review and meta‐analysis has concluded that the risk associated with lithium exposure at any time in pregnancy is relatively low. The researchers suggested that since the risk of malformations is highest with lithium use in the first trimester, dosages early in pregnancy should be adjusted to the lower end of the therapeutic range. Findings were published online Oct. 18 in the American Journal of Psychiatry .
