Although most of the atypical antipsychotics possess fewer extrapyramidal effects than typical antipsychotics, they also have potential cardiac toxicity, including prolongation of the QT interval on the electrocardiogram (ECG), which is associated with an increased risk of developing the rare but life‐threatening ventricular tachycardia known as torsades de pointes.
