A case‐control study derived from a Canadian health insurance database has found an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease in individuals who had used benzodiazepines at some point in their lifetime. The association with Alzheimer's disease was stronger in individuals who received more daily doses and longer‐acting medications, which study authors believe reinforces long‐standing concerns about long‐term use of benzodiazepines. Study results were published online Sept. 9 in the British Medical Journal .
