A study that the author of an accompanying journal editorial calls “one of the most important studies ever undertaken” to evaluate combined pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for major depression has found an enhanced rate of recovery with combination treatment for persons with severe nonchronic depression. The study design was noteworthy in that clinicians had the ability to use aggressive dosing of antidepressants and to switch medications if patients were not achieving results.
