Forty eight extracts of four plants of the family Combretaceae were screened for antibacterial activity against standard organisms as well as clinical isolates. The extracts in different solvent systems showed high activity against both standard organisms and clinical isolates. Phytochemical screening revealed that the plants were very rich in tannins to which antibacterial activity may be attributed. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
