An aqueous extract of Cochlospermum planchonii rhizomes prepared in the manner used by native medical practitioners in northern Nigeria to treat jaundice protects CCI 4 ‐treated rats from liver damage measured as elevated serum levels of diagnostic enzymes. The extract inhibits cytochrome P‐450 monoxygenases aminopyrine‐ N ‐demethylase and aniline hydroxylase, suggesting a plausible hepatoprotective mechanism.
