Caffeic and protocatechic acids demonstrated a non‐specific antispasmodic action on smooth muscle in several isolated organs of the rat. This action appeared to be related to calcium concentration. At certain doses, the test compounds enhanced the noradrenergic response in a manner similar to that of cocaine.
