The analytical method described is a rapid means of assay for total alkaloids, using a back titration with acid employing a potentiometric determination of end‐point. Samples required (approx. 1.5 g) are much less than those for conventional percolation processes. Using the procedure, the total alkaloid content of Datura metel has been shown to peak in the hot dry season, only minimal levels of bases being detected in the rainy season in Ibadan.
