Abstract Extracts of the leaves and fruits of Alchornia cordifolia (ACL2 and ACF2) were found to inhibit the growth of Trypanosoma brucei brucei in rats. Purification of ACL2 and ACF2 yielded fractions ACL3, ACL4 and ACF3, ACF4, respectively, which were inactive. However fractions ACF3 and ACF4 were found to be toxic in rats. The trypanocidal activity of these extracts were compared to suramin.
