Abstract The spasmolytic activity of Thymus membranaceus essential oil in the duodenum isolated from rat has been investigated. The qualitative and quantitative composition of the essential oil was studied. The essential oil affects the duodenum in two ways, showing a spasmogenic action (due to 1,8‐cineole) and, on the other hand, an antagonistic non‐competitive effect against the contractions by acetylcholine (due to the phenols and hydrocarbons).
