The Rapid Research Letter by Stefan Schumacher et al. on p. 10 ff. describes a possible pump/control configuration to obtain a controlled optical switch in semiconductor microcavities. The authors develop a theoretical treatment of the coupling between the cavity electric field and the exciton polarization within a typical GaAs microcavity. Based on this treatment, they evaluate a numerical model for the spatiotemporal dynamics of four‐wave mixing processes. The Letter is accompanied by an Expert Opinion by Andrew M. C. Dawes 'Towards a single‐photon all‐optical transistor' on p. A17 ff. of the present issue of pss‐RRL.
