The occurrence of ferroelectric properties characterized by two (and three) Curie temperatures is explained phenomenologically by a model of structural antiferroelectrics with two sublattices, involving hydrogen‐like bonds with asymmetric potential wells. On the assumption of a slight discrepancy between the differences in energy levels Δ U 1 and Δ U 2 of the two sublattices, a non‐zero spontaneous polarization is obtained for certain well‐defined ranges of temperature. The model permits an explanation of the temperature dependence of polarization in Rochelle salt and thiourea.
