By establishing an effective transfer matrix technique, we calculate the problem of the surface magnetization direction canting between perpendicular and in‐plane states by the classical XY model. Our calculations show many new features which differ from the results obtained by other molecular field approximations. A possible mechanism for the slope discontinuity on the surface magnetization is proposed.
