The XANES region of the L II and L III absorption discontinuities of some rare earths in their oxides and cuprates is studied. The main absorption peak and the peak adjacent to it are attributed to the transitions of electrons from the inner L levels to the outer levels t 2g and e g , which are formed due to the crystalline field in the materials. It is observed that the energy difference between these two peaks varies linearly with the atomic number Z for the oxides as well as the cuprates.
