Abstract The model of indirect interaction between localized spins via conduction electrons in thin magnetic films is applied to the calculation of the interlayer exchange coupling parameter. The case of the spacer layer of f. c. c. structure is analyzed in detail. The oscillatory character of the exchange coupling parameter as a function of the spacer thickness as well as of the thickness of the magnetic layer is found for various orientations of the spacer.
