The results of analytical calculations of the energy spectrum and wave functions of electrons localized within quantum wells grown on IV‐VI narrow‐gap semiconductors are presented. The eigenvalue equations determining the size‐quantized levels are in agreement with previous reports in literature, but some aspects concerning the symmetry of wave functions are elucidated. The wave functions for localized states are presented in explicit form. Using these wave functions as a new basis we obtain the effective Hamiltonian for electrons in quantum wells. The energy spectrum of electrons in the presence of a magnetic field is presented as well.
