The variational perturbation approach of Rivail and Rinaldi as generalized by Shukla and Easa is utilized to derive a 2 L ‐pole static polarizability and a shielding factor for the electron in the ground state moving in a screened Coulomb potential of Debye form. The final formulas are reduced to power series of the screening parameter D in the asymptotic region. The special cases discussed by Fowler can readily be obtained from the present generalized form by direct substitution of the corresponding L values.
