The chemical shift of the X‐ray K‐absorption edge of cobalt in the systems CoSO 4 . 2H 2 O, CoCl 2 . 6H 2 O, Co 2 O 3 , Co 3 O 4 , CoO, CoS, and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 · CoSO 4 · 6H 2 O is studied using a 40 cm Cauchois type bent crystal spectrograph of transmission type. On the basis of least‐square regression analysis a cubic relationship between the X‐ray chemical shift and the partial charge on the absorbing ion is suggested. The relation is utilized for estimating the partial charge on the Co ion in the system (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 · CoSO 4 · 6H 2 O.
