The ESR spectrum of an unperturbed hydrogen atom on a cation site is observed after vacuumultraviolet irradiation of LiF‐H − , Mg 2+ crystals at room temperature. A production mechanism involving optical destruction of magnesium‐vacancy dipoles and U‐centres, release of the cation vacancies from the radiation‐induced Mg‐related centres, and subsequent capture of hydrogen atoms by the free cation vacancies, is proposed.
