The effects of electron correlation resulting from one‐particle operators in third order are investigated. These effects are presented by an effective Hamiltonian having the form of a “quadratic crystal‐field”. The fitting to the Stark structure of the J = 15/2 manifold by the “quadratic crystal‐field” Hamiltonian gives good agreement with experimental data. The “quadratic crystal‐field” Hamiltonian may be useful for the analysis of the energy‐level scheme of Pr 3+ ions in LiYF 4 crystal, where there are problems in describing the higher manifolds by an effective one‐electron Hamiltonian.
