The analytic expressions for the five elastic constants of an h. c. p. lattice are deduced. These expressions are appropriate for fitting empirical many‐body interatomic potentials of the embedded atom type. The uniform deformation method is used together with the lattice symmetry properties. These greatly simplify algebraic manipulations and provide for an easy inclusion of the contribution of inner strains.
