The one‐dimensional Blume‐Capel model with an arbitrary spin S is studied by the use of a recently developed effective‐field theory. The internal energy, susceptibility, specific heat, and all the two‐spin correlations are obtained analytically and for spin‐1/2 the exact results are reproduced.
