A strongly anisotropic transient luminescence of a semiconductor which has been excited by an intensive short electromagnetic pulse is predicted and described. This phenomenon occurs on a femtosecond time scale and results directly from the unrelaxed total momentum transferred to the dense electron–hole plasma by the initial optical excitation pulse.
