Zn 2 CuGaSe 4 and Zn 2 CuGaSe 4 :Co 2+ single crystals are grown by the slow cooling method. The optical energy gaps of these single crystals are found to be 1.510 and 1.490 c V at 298 K, respectively. In the Zn 2 CuGaSe 4 :Co 2+ single crystals, the impurity optical absorption peaks are attributed to the electronic transitions between the electron energy levels of Co 2+ ions sited at the T d symmetry of the Zn 2 CuGaSe 4 host lattice. The crystal field, Racah, and spin—orbit coupling parameters are given as D q = 425.5, B = 404, and λ = −348 cm −1 , respectively.
