The deviations from Hooke's law in the hardened roller bearing steel SAE 52100 (100Cr6) in cyclic stress—strain experiments are related to the third‐order elastic constants of standard steels and α‐iron. The comparison of the measured values of the non‐linear constant k M , with the values calculated from the third‐order elastic constants reveals a surprisingly good agreement, even for the case that k M , is calculated using the single‐crystal data of α‐iron.
