Stationary Maxwell‐Bloch equations describing saturable‐absorber‐filled Fabry‐Perot resonators are studied by the causal diagram method to bring into prominence the role of interrelations among the factors involved. The representative diagram contains three feedback loops. It is shown that cooperation of all these loops is required to produce conditions necessary for optical bistability. Similar behaviour is encountered in the case of two‐sections semiconductor injection laser. General implications are suggested.
