The experimental data of the EXAFS associated with the K absorption discontinuity of manganese are analysed in four manganese oxides, viz. MnO, Mn 3 O 4 , Mn 2 O 3 and MnO 2 using the graphical method originally proposed by Lytle, Sayers and Stern and recently modified by Deshpande, Sapre and Mande. It is observed that the backscattering parameter β 1 decreases nonlinearly with the increase in the O: Mn ratio. A relationship of this kind can be useful in obtaining information about the content of the ligand atoms attached to the metal atom in compounds.
