With main emphasis on studies of optical second‐harmonic generation in centrosymmetric media new expressions for the local and near‐local parts of the nonlinear conductivity response tensor are derived. The expressions are obtained via a moment expansion of the fully nonlocal response. The new results allow a direct comparison between the multipole expansion formulation used in studies on dielectrics and the delocalized approach often adopted in works on the metals. Contact is made to recent investigations of the nonlinear response of a flat surface.
