The one‐component plasma (OCP) is used as reference system to calculate the long‐wavelength limit S (0) of the structure factor of liquid alkali metals within the random phase approximation (RPA). It is found that the OCP system is suitable to describe S (0) when the plasma parameter corresponds to the minimum variational upper bound to the free energy.
