Transport of excited electrons with an energy less than the band gap value in the conduction band of insulators is described analytically. Interaction of electrons with optical phonons is assumed to be the predominant process in scattering. By solving the diffusion equation obtained on the basis of the kinetic equation it is possible to find the energy distribution of the electrons in the solid and vacuum. Photoelectron spectra for CsI are calculated. Comparison of theoretical and experimental results yields the structure of the density of states in the conduction band, the energy loss intensity, and the free path time of excited electrons with respect to the electron—phonon scattering.
