Abstract It is shown that the dispersion of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function of the TCNQ salts with methyl derivatives of pyridinium gives important information about the density of electronic states. It leads to the conclusion that a gap is not present in the optical excitation spectrum of the salts. It is shown that the model of the localized charge oscillations in dimers is inadequate for the salts.
