A one dimensional solid of the kind which may undergo a Peierls transition is considered in the mean field approximation. The electrons in a half‐filled tight‐binding band interact via the soft or softening phonons. It is found that, for reasonable values of the interactions parameters, electron pairs with the momentum equal to that of the phonons condense at low temperatures, coexisting with the Peierls order. The transition temperatures are discussed.
