An investigation is made of the polarized far IR and Raman scattering spectra of layered single crystals of ternary compound TlInS 2 in the 6 to 300 K temperature range including the series of the phase transition. New unknown low‐frequency Raman and IR active phonons are observed. It is shown that the interpretation of the vibrational properties of TlInS 2 crystal are in good agreement with the C 2h 6space group. A low‐frequency Raman active soft mode is observed and analysed in the ferroelectric phase of this crystal. The pecularities in changing of the spectra of optical phonons, connected with a transition of the crystal from the para to ferroelectric state, from modulating structure, and quadrupling along C ‐axis are observed and analysed.
