The changes are investigated in the phonon spectrum for the F‐centre in the presence of excess electron. The frequencies of local phonons for the ground and the first excited self‐consistent states of the F‐centre in KC1 are calculated. The adiabatic approximation is used to determine a secondorder correction to the energy for self‐consistent states in the F‐centre. As a limit the resting polaron is considered. For excited self‐consistent states local modes are found with frequencies larger than in optical phonons. It is also found that excited self‐consistent states of the polaron show a phonon (pseudo Jahn‐Teller) instability.
