The magnetic susceptibility, low‐temperature heat capacity, and superconducting transition temperature of an ordered and disordered niobium carbide are investigated. Features peculiar to the electronic structure of a nonstoichiometric niobium carbide are discussed. To explain the superconductive properties of the niobium carbide, a quasi‐two‐dimensional model is proposed which takes into account the peculiarities in the crystal structure of this compound. It is suggested that an exciton mechanism of superconductivity is possible which may be due to the layered structure of the niobium carbide.
