The amplification of Gaussian‐shaped light pulses being incident on the facet of a semiconductor diode laser which is operated below its lasing threshold (Fabry‐Perot or laser amplifier) is studied theoretically. Numerical results are presented showing the time‐dependent intensity behaviour as well as the frequency chirp, caused by self‐phase modulation, of the transmitted and reflected fields.
