The phenomenon of absorptive bistability in a two‐section injection laser is analysed employing the method of causal diagrams. Steady‐state rate equations for electrons in the gain ( n 1 ) and in the saturable absorber ( n 2 ) sections and for photons ( n p ) can be represented by diagrams containing feedback loop attached to vertex n p and encompassing vertex n 2 . Numerical analysis of typical cases confirms the crucial role played by the feedback relationships in producing the bistable regime.
