The influence of monochromatic nonresonant laser fields is discussed on the elementary excitation spectrum of semiconductors. It is shown that the different renormalizations in inorganic and onedimensional organic materials can be understood in the framework of one and the same theory. Applications, such as generation of ultrashort voltage pulses in biased quantum wells, are discussed.
