Using the Schrödinger variational principle for average energy in the case of a system interacting weakly with environment and for a given entropy, the equilibrium statistical operator is obtained. In the case when the interaction with the environment can be neglected this statistical operator is identical with that of the canonical Gibbs distribution. This statistical operator may be useful in describing thermodynamical properties of thin solid films and similar systems.
