Using optical spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) colour centres are studied in CaF 2 :Li + and CaF 2 :Na + . In each of these two matrices, there exists a weakly perturbed F A centre which is called F   A (1)and probably a more deeply perturbed F A centre or F   A (2) ; the centre which is improperly named F 2A has a paramagnetic ground state, its MCD is very different from that of the F 2 centre in pure CaF 2 ; there are two non‐paramagnetic centres “F 3A + ” and f with similar optical and magneto‐optical properties but with a long wavelengths shift of the absorption and emission spectra of the f centre.
