A simple model is proposed for studying the lattice dynamics of h.c.p. rare earth metals. The interaction between core‐core and (f, d)shells–(f, d)shells via conduction electrons is considered through a screened‐Coulomb potential. The direct Coulomb interaction between cores and (f, d)shell electrons is essentially short‐range and is, therefore, described through a non‐central type interaction extending upto the third neighbours.
